Friday 1st March.

The weekend started here, after both Mag and I at work this week and not much wind forecast it looked like the perfect opportunity to get away in the campervan. Luckily I finished work early and was able to bike to Landguard with Mag, Jay and Maddi for some beach combing then it was home to quickly pack the van with the basics before heading the 25 miles from Felixstowe to Bawdsey Quay. The trip was a bit of a pain as the traffic was heavy but we arrived at the Quay after an hour and were relieved to find the prime parking space was free:) It is the end spot in the first lay- by looking up the River Deben. It was a very quiet sunny afternoon so after a cuppa and read we went for a walk up past the Quay to the shingle spit in search of coal. Not much coal but a lovely evening for a walk and when we got back to the van it was nice to see a young family enjoying a BBQ on the beach :) Then after spam and eggs, a game of cards we were shattered so we went to bed early. It was funny when we were quiet the wind seemed strong and seemed to be blowing all night!

Saturday 2nd March.

Woke at 7 after a restful night and it sounded breezy but after an early morning stroll a little way up the river with the camera you could see it was not windy, it must just be the way the wind funnels up the river making sound windy. Then after a lovely couple of hours reading, enjoying the stunning view watching life on the river. It was then time for a walk, we started by heading up the river but you can't get far that way as a creek blocks your way, it was good to see some curlews and egrets. We then headed to the quay and on to Bawdsey beach by the impressive Manor house now a school. Turning left we walked towards East Lane martello Tower. This is a great beach covered in old broken down wooden groynes perfect for beach combing. There is a large cliff running along side with a old RAF base famous for radar in the second world war, we followed the tide lines stopping to pick up the odd piece of coal, shells and lobster claws. It's very quiet here which is fantastic but we did met a nice couple from Ipswich who gave us some tips on amber and sharks tooth finding:)

We made it to the Martello tower which is a long way to walk along a shingle beach! We couldn't face the return journey along the beach but found a path up the cliff through a wood near the base fence to the Bawdsey road about a mile short of the van. We made it back to the van after about 4 hours knackered and starving and enjoyed a late lunch watching a family also in a VW van having a great day on the beach, building sand castles and playing in the mud.

We packed up and left at about four and headed for home as it clouded up and the rain had started as we reached Felixstowe, we spotted 10 or so deer in a field at Shotisham!

A great night in the van - it's a nice spot:)
